Pivot’s 2024 ESG Report Highlights

At Pivot Energy, a robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework is instrumental in creating lasting value and driving sustainable growth in communities nationwide. This ethos is at the heart of Pivot’s company culture, guides its business decisions, and shapes its leadership in socially impactful and environmentally responsible solar development.

In 2024, Pivot witnessed its commitment play out in tangible benefits for local communities and ecosystems. Pivot improved how it tracks and reports greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, set a timeline for achieving Net Zero, and conducted a company-wide survey to better serve and empower its team.

As Pivot continues its mission to redefine what is possible within the renewable energy landscape and reduce emissions, it invites you to review the strategic details in the 2024 ESG report.

Environmental Initiatives

Building the Path to Net Zero

In 2024, Pivot reached a landmark goal: 3.5 gigawatts of affordable renewable energy projects, either completed or in development. This means that about 2.6 million households can access and benefit from solar energy that previously couldn’t. This milestone translates into tangible environmental benefits. Leading the fight against climate change has been Pivot’s mission from the beginning, and in 2024, its projects produced nearly 85 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy. This is the equivalent of:

  • Taking 13,000 gas-powered cars off the road
  • 7,656 homes energy use
  • 63 million pounds of coal not burned

Climate change’s unprecedented threat only continues to grow, and businesses have an increasing responsibility to reduce carbon emissions. To measure its performance and make more sustainable changes, in late 2022, Pivot initiated a thorough process of ramping up the precision of our GHG emissions accounting. To this end, it transitioned to Salesforce Net Zero Cloud and expanded its tracking across scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 emissions.

To lay the foundation for Pivot’s Net Zero goal, it began tracking two key metrics in 2024: carbon intensity (CO2e/MW) and the allocation percentage across its portfolio. These metrics allow the company to better understand its scope 3 emissions and work more closely with partners to reduce emissions throughout its supply chain. Pivot also set a timeline with clear steps critical to achieving a Net Zero target. As its strategy evolves, it will add additional phases to this timeline.

Pivot’s employees also took environmental action. Its E, S, and G Committees organized opportunities for employees to participate in a wide range of environmental initiatives, including:

  • A nationwide trash pickup
  • A river cleanup to protect river ecosystems
  • Seed planting to restore local wildlife habitats
  • Donating clothes to clothing swaps and to our parent closet for new families
  • Among others.

Social Initiatives

Continuing to Cultivate Internal Culture

Pivot’s social impact begins within. In 2024, it continued to implement its best-in-class corporate social responsibility protocols, encouraged employees to be present, and strengthened the communities it operates in.

To these ends, Pivot expanded its Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and Employee Interest Groups (EIGs) to foster inclusivity among team members and strengthen the Pivot community.

It’s incredibly heartening to see Pivot team members’ engagement and commitment to supporting communities outside of their work. In 2024, 56% of Pivoteers participated in at least one Pivot-sponsored event. Twenty-one percent of the company gathered to support EOC conSERVE’s effort of energy efficiency kits for income-qualified Colorado families. Pivot also collaborated with 10 nonprofit organizations to provide hands-on support in our communities.

To accelerate its employees’ efforts, Pivot sponsored the Employee Donation Match Program. For every dollar donated by a team member to a qualified nonprofit, Pivot matched the contribution, up to a maximum of $500 per employee annually. The results exceeded expectations:

  • Pivot employees donated $86,225 (including the company match), far surpassing the goal of $55,000
  • 53% of Pivoteers contributed to this success
  • In all, Pivot supported 118 different organizations nationwide

Volunteering and Community Impact Initiatives

Pivot strives to positively engage with the communities in which it builds solar energy projects and enhances trust and local support for renewable energy. In 2024, Pivot developed a plan for a more consistent and robust community engagement process to increase transparency. This three-pronged plan was deployed across every project to ensure all voices and needs are heard:

  1. Contact project neighbors via letter prior to submitting a permit application with the local jurisdiction.

  2. Invite neighbors and host a community meeting to share more information about Pivot, the site details, land stewardship practices, and the anticipated timeline for next steps.

  3. Report outcomes to the communities and follow up regarding outstanding questions via email, phone, or mail.

In December 2024, Pivot hosted a holiday event called Happy Hour for the Common Good at its offices in Denver, Chicago, St. Louis, and Elkridge. The event involved coordinating gift donations and personal care items for local nonprofit organizations. Pivot also sponsored the Colorado Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation’s “Tee Off for Tatas” golf tournament with a $5,000 donation that provided financial support to women undergoing cancer treatment.

In addition, Pivot launched a pro bono legal program in 2024 to assist farmers and landowners interested in stepping into the agrivoltaics industry. With this program, its aim is to eliminate cost and legal barriers for those who want to support solar projects through crop harvesting, grazing, or other vegetation management.

Governance Initiatives

Holding Itself Accountable

As a proud member of the B Corp community, Pivot strives to institute the governance structures needed to fulfill its environmental and social goals. A key governance focus in 2024 was improving Pivot’s tracking of key metrics and processes across the organization.

This included documenting standard operating procedures across teams, implementing feedback from stakeholders on compensation, communication, legislative engagement, inclusion, and more.

Pivot cannot create a brighter future without its team. The company conducts an annual employee survey to assess internal engagement and satisfaction and to identify strengths, areas of improvement and opportunities for continued focus. In 2024, employees reported a 10-point rise in “Company Confidence” due to refining the type and frequency of communications sent by leadership, as well as a 20-point improvement in “Action,” as team members identified positive changes and improved communication.

These responses drove Pivot’s approaches to evaluating, revising, and improving communication around promotions, including launching internal pillars to provide transparency around opportunities and growth. It also instituted realigned pay structures based on results from the 2023 survey. Pivot took great care to recognize individuals and groups for their contributions toward fighting for a brighter tomorrow and to engage with different team members, learn new skills, and embrace new challenges.

“I strongly feel that Pivot has an amazing work culture. There are always opportunities to connect with colleagues both within and outside of office hours. As a result, I've had the privilege of getting to know many of my colleagues well, and I consider many to be good friends, even some who work remotely in other states. Pivot has a noteworthy commitment to ESG values, and I am privileged to have been a part of so many earnest initiatives to make Pivot a leader in ESG.” — A Pivot employee
